Chapter 13

I wanted to run away. I wanted to burst from the room, find my truck, hop in and drive as far and as fast as I could.

“You’re kidding me?” I said with disbelief thick in my voice. “Vampires exist?”

Rufus nodded. “They exist and what you think you know about them doesn’t apply.” The women all quieted as Rufus took the wheel. They laid their quilting in their lap and stared with rapt attention. “What you think you know—that they’re demons that can only come out at night—isn’t true. They walk around during the day and can hide among us. There are some,” he added quickly, “that it’s obvious what they are. We can, as magical beings, sense that they are also magical. But then there are others, and I’ve only met one like this in my entire life, that can slip among us undetected. That can hide among humans and feed off them and us, and we won’t know any differently. Those are the worst kind. The ones that can shift and shape to appear human. There is no way to the truth of their being. All we can do is hope that they don’t attack us. Or that we discover who they are before they know we’re on to them.”

Everyone was quiet. We were uncertain what to say. At least, I was uncertain. I didn’t know about the ladies. He had left me dumbstruck.

A vampire? In Peachwood? Someone had preyed on the carpenter? This was too close to home. “It could be a one-off.”

He nodded. “It could be. There’s no way to know for sure.”

“No one else has died since the carpenter,” Norma Ray said cheerfully. “So that’s something to be happy about. Maybe the vampire was just passing through.”

Urleen rolled her eyes. “I’ve never heard of a vampire who was just passing through. When you find yourself a good meal, you tend to stay—no matter who you are.”

“And a vampire especially would,” Malene said. “That’s what I think.”

Rufus nodded. “I’m apt to agree with you. But Clem isn’t going to the barn alone anyway. She’s already agreed to that. Meanwhile, if anyone sees someone or something suspicious, call me. Day or night. If there is a vampire on the loose, we need to be prepared for it. We need to be ready to battle, and if it’s preying on the townspeople of Peachwood,” he said through gritted teeth, “we need to stop it.”

My heart thundered. This was so unreal. A vampire was in Peachwood? I was stunned. The women looked stunned as well. Malene, Urleen and Norma Ray stared at one another quietly.

The seriousness of the situation seemed to sober all of us right up.

I spoke. “So. We have a vampire in town. Well, what are we doing sitting around here? We need to find him or her and stop it from claiming any more victims.”

Rufus shook his head. “It’s not that easy, like I explained. It could be anyone.”

“You’re right. It could be. It could even be Rance.
